Clinical trials and biomedical research

Our world-class clinical trials and biomedical research focuses on liver and respiratory disease, and oncology.

Our co-location with one of Australia’s largest and best private hospitals, Greenslopes Private Hospital, means we work with globally distinguished specialists to deliver clinical trials and biomedical research.

These diseases represent areas of significant clinical need, and also impact veterans at higher rates.

We maintain close relationships with research, government, not-for-profit and ex-service organisations to support the advancement of research and innovation.

Why we do what we do

Clinical trials

We conducted leading clinical trials in liver and respiratory illnesses, and oncology.

We have 40-50 active national and international clinical trials at any one time, and we are a world-first recruiter and highest recruiter for many clinical trials.

Liver research

One in four adults has, or will develop, fatty liver disease—that’s six million Australians.

We are fighting the rising global epidemic of fatty liver disease through our innovative liver research. We are also working to tackle liver cancer, which is not only rising in Australia, but has only a 23% five-year survival rate.

Our liver research is led by GMR’s Director of Research, Professor Darrell Crawford.

Respiratory research

We focus on research into pulmonary nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infections and bronchiectasis, a common chronic lung disease.

Both conditions are closely related and are increasing in prevalence in Australia.

Our pioneering work in this area is led by Professor Rachel Thomson.
