Professor Crawford has been at the forefront of transformational breakthroughs, including the global effort to make hepatitis B and C treatable, and even curable. Today, he is tackling newer challenges such as fatty liver disease and liver cancer, with one in three adults affected and early detection more critical than ever. At GMR, Darrell is leading the development of a saliva-based test that could allow people to easily self‑screen for liver disease (see page 7 for more information).

For more than 25 years, Professor Darrell Crawford has dedicated his career to improving the lives of people with liver disease. As Director of Research at GMR, he leads the liver research unit while continuing to practise as a clinician, spending about 60% of his time with patients.

Under his leadership, GMR’s research is also exploring gene therapy for hemochromatosis, another common but under-recognised liver condition. Darrell’s influence extends beyond research, helping shape GMR’s strategic direction and its close integration with Greenslopes Private Hospital.

Always moving forward, Professor Crawford recently authored the chapter on hemochromatosis in Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine, and we are proud to celebrate Darrell receiving the John H. Tyrer Research Prize for Outstanding Research Contributions from The University of Queensland’s School of Medicine—a prestigious recognition of his distinguished career in liver disease research.
