We’ve partnered with several Queensland sporting organisations, including Hockey Queensland, through our Friends of Gallipoli Medical Research initiative, which aims to strengthen opportunities for veterans to engage in community sport as players, volunteers and officials.
Gallipoli Medical Research CEO Miriam Kent said research consistently shows veterans can face significant social and psychological challenges when transitioning out of military service.
“Our research has shown many veterans can experience a loss of identity, purpose and social connection after leaving Defence,” Ms Kent said.
“A study completed for Invictus Australia by our Research Engagement and Development Manager, Dr Miranda Van Hooff, found involvement in sport can improve veterans’ physical and mental health, while also strengthening social support, identity and purpose.
“That’s why partnerships with organisations like Hockey Queensland are so important.”
Former Australian Army soldier Chris Thomson is one veteran benefiting from that connection.
Chris served 26 years in the Army in explosive ordnance disposal before being medically discharged after doctors discovered several blast-induced lesions on his brain.
Now, he volunteers with Hockey Queensland in integrity and judiciary matters, helping clubs navigate complex conduct and personnel issues.
“The morals, values and ethics ingrained in me through the Army have given me a strong foundation for working in sport,” Chris said.
“Sport can be passionate and emotional, so being able to help clubs work through issues fairly and professionally is incredibly rewarding.”
Chris said volunteering had helped restore his sense of purpose while allowing him to manage ongoing health challenges.
“Having constant pain and then losing your identity and purpose — it really messes with your head,” he said.
“This work has given me purpose again, while also giving me the flexibility I need to manage my health.”
Hockey Queensland CEO Rebecca Randazzo said veterans brought valuable skills and leadership into community sport environments.
“Chris’ experience, professionalism and integrity have made a significant contribution to Hockey Queensland and our clubs,” Ms Randazzo said.
“We’re proud to support initiatives that create meaningful opportunities for veterans to stay connected through sport.”
