Overview

The Gallipoli Medical Research Foundation seeks to support all research which is substantially undertaken at Greenslopes Private Hospital and meets the objectives of the Foundation. Examples of research that have or would be supported by the Foundation include (but are not limited to):

  • Cancer

  • Liver Disease

  • Heart disease

  • Hypertension

  • Stroke

  • Respiratory Disease

  • Pain Management

  • Obesity

  • Mental health

The Gallipoli Medical Research Centre was officially opened on 1 June 2007. The Centre which includes PC2 laboratories, a stat laboratory and clean rooms was made possible with financial support from the Gallipoli Medical Research Foundation, its major partners and the Federal Government.

 

Currently, it accommodates:

  • The Centre for Immune and Targeted Therapy, including a Living Tumour Bank

  • The Liver Research Unit

  • A Clinical Trials Unit.

The Centre's development strategy includes:

  • A molecular pathology and imaging unit, infrastructure for:

    • Molecular pathology equipment

    • Gene/proteomic investigations

    • Molecular imaging

  • Other research teams, to be added as the Centre expands.

Research Strengths

The major strengths of research conducted at GPH over the last 30 years, and where we have established an international reputation, are in hypertension, cardiovascular disease, endocrinology and cancer fields. This research has focussed on:

  • Hypertension and causes of Hypertension (including secondary forms such as primary aldosteronism, renal artery stenosis, phaeochromocytoma, reninoma and pseudohypoaldosteronism type 2)

  • Stress Hormones and their action on the body

  • Obesity and its impact on the endocrine system

  • Diabetes

  • Cardiovascular Research in particular lipids and dietary management

  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in Vietnam Veterans

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Cancer

  • Cerebrovascular Haemorrhage (stroke)

  • Respiratory Diseases

  • Chronic Pain Management

  • Mental Health.

Clinical Facilities And Expertise At Greenslopes Private Hospital

  • Haematology and Oncology Outpatient, Day Inpatient and Inpatient Wards

  • Management of blood, bone marrow and lymph system cancers including lymphoma, myeloma, Hodgkin’s Disease and leukaemia

  • Stem Cell Transplantation

  • Immune therapy for cancer, leukaemia, myeloma and lymphoma

  • Haematology Pathology and Histology (Sullivan and Nicolaides Pathology and Queensland Medical Laboratory)

  • Clinical Trials Pathology Services (Sullivan and Nicolaides – on site, Queensland Medical Laboratories – on site sample collection)

  • Radiology (Queensland X-ray) including CT scanning, MRI scans, nuclear medicine including fully digital X-ray storage, retrieval and evaluation

  • Pharmacy specialising in preparation and delivery of cancer therapy including chemotherapy and monoclonal antibody therapy (APHS)

  • Surgery for all cancer types

Greenslopes Private Hospital is Australia’s largest private hospital and a tertiary referral centre for patients with serious illnesses. As a teaching hospital with the University of Queensland, Greenslopes plays a major role in teaching medical students and training specialists. There is a full range of medical and support services available allowing efficient, high quality clinically based research to thrive on site.
