Research: Liver Research Unit

Our projects for students

The Liver Research Unit provides an exciting environment in which young scientists can develop their research career. The senior members of the group are a unique blend of scientists and clinicians working together to study the molecular and cellular pathways involved in the pathogenesis of liver disease caused by iron overload conditions (eg. hereditary haemochromatosis) and excess alcohol consumption. Opportunities also exist to study the mechanisms and therapy of the process of hepatic fibrosis which, if untreated, ultimately leads to the development of liver cirrhosis. The Liver Research Unit has strong links with the Queensland Liver Transplant Service, local investigators at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research, and overseas collaborators. Successful applicants will have opportunities to present their research work in National and International forums with the support of this internationally recognised research team.

Top-Up Scholarship:

Top-up scholarships may be available for postgraduate students interested in undertaking medical research in the field of liver disease. Tax-free stipends of $10,000 may be provided to students with First Class Honours in science with strong skills in molecular and cell biology who either hold or expect to receive an APA or similar scholarship. Provision of a top-up scholarship would be conditional upon the successful applicant receiving an APA or similar scholarship.
